The Rhinoplasty Stigma

Oct 22, 2015 | Face and Nose, Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a lot more than just a superficial quest for a ‘perfect’ nose. The truth is a deviated septum can impact your life.

Many people are candidates for rhinoplasty and aren’t aware of it. We can be born with a deviated septum, or it can occur due to blunt force or other trauma incurred throughout life, and you may not be fully conscious of just how badly this condition is affecting your quality of life.

Complications from a deviated septum

A deviated septum is a condition in which the nasal septum (the wall of bone and cartilage dividing the nasal cavity in half) is off center. It is estimated that 80% of people have some form of misalignment to their nasal septum. When this imbalance is severe it can have serious health implications

Breathing issues, snoring and potentially lethal sleep apnoea are all possible side effects of a deviated septum. The deviation impacts the nasal air passage and creates an imbalance in airflow causing difficulty in breathing. If you were born with this condition you may not have ever noticed this imbalance, and even if it was caused by trauma, as we aren’t consciously aware of the balance of airflow between nostrils.

A crooked septum can interfere with the drainage of the sinuses, leading to chronic sinus infections. Frequent nosebleeds are often caused by increased turbulence in the nasal passage as air attempts to flow past the damaged septum. A deviated septum can also cause facial pain and headaches from the pressure on the nasal sidewall. People with this condition also frequently feel congested or clogged up, and experience a reduced sense of taste and smell.
