Beware illegal cosmetic surgery taking places in homes and hotel rooms

Aug 4, 2016 | Cosmetic Surgery

We were saddened, but unfortunately not surprised, to hear that a recent investigation has uncovered cases of illegal cosmetic surgery procedures being performed by people with no qualifications in hotel rooms, and their homes.

Advertised through social media, these illegal procedures included things ranging from Botox and dermal filler injections, right through to nose bridge lifts, protein suture face lifts (meloplasty) and double eyelid suturing.

A report into the investigation by the ABC’s Sophie Scott and Rebecca Armitage  mentions one woman who apparently underwent a double eyelid suture at an apartment in Sydney, and was left with scarring and damage to her eyelids, as well as bruising.

The NSW Health Care and Complaints Commission told the ABC their investigation had determined the person who carried out the surgery was not qualified to do the procedure, and was not a registered medical practitioner in Australia.

Incidents of this variety aren’t isolated to Sydney though; the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) has also been carrying out investigations into alleged illegal cosmetic surgery here in Melbourne, including an incident where an unregistered person was believed to have been performing procedures at an apartment in Docklands.

Why qualifications matter for cosmetic surgical procedures

When you see a properly qualified and registered surgeon, you know with confidence that person from whom you are receiving care will comply with Australian standards, and ensure they meet their duty of care to you.

By choosing a plastic surgeon who has been certified as a specialist by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Australian Medical Council, and Medicare Australia, you can be sure that you are receiving the very best care possible, which, in turn, goes a long way towards ensuring you get the results you want.

The normal motivation to undergo cosmetic surgical procedures is to try to enhance your natural features. The risks of the potentially irreversible damage which can be caused by these backyard “practitioners” are just too great.
