The ins and outs of rhinoplasty: What to expect, why to consider it and where to have it done

Are you considering rhinoplasty? Mr David Morgan is one of the foremost practitioners in Melbourne and prides himself on excellent results and the education of his patients

Rhinoplasty is one the most common cosmetic surgeries performed throughout the world. It focuses on the restructuring of soft tissue, bone and cartilage of the nose. Rhinoplasty is not always a purely cosmetic treatment, as it is also used to restructure the nasal cavity to correct any breathing problems stemming from the nose.

Of course, the procedure also addresses cosmetic issues such as asymmetry, large bumps on the bridge of the nose, the shape of the nostrils, and the projection of the tip of the nose. Changes to your nose can be made in a variety of ways to alter its shape, profile and general size.

Depending on the requirements of the procedure, rhinoplasty may involve either reducing the nose’s size or augmenting it using cartilage from other areas of the body.

Consultations with Mr David Morgan and what makes a suitable rhinoplasty candidate

Mr Morgan takes great care in assessing possible patients in order to determine their suitability for rhinoplasty. He takes a number of aspects into consideration before advising you of his findings, and a suggested approach to your procedure. Rhinoplasty consultations usually last around 45 minutes, and during this time Mr Morgan will discuss with you the range of options available, as well as the possible outcomes.

In this first meeting with Mr Morgan, it is vital that he understands exactly what it is that you desire to achieve through rhinoplasty, so he can determine how best to achieve that. Every patient has a unique set of expectations and this discussion will aid the process of reshaping your nose to your specifications.

There are also a few things he will check before he sets a date for your surgery, which includes:

  1. If you are fit and healthy enough to undergo surgery and the recovery process
  2. That you have realistic expectations about the surgery and what can be achieved
  3. If you are a smoker (we highly recommend you stop)
  4. Your exact reasons for undergoing the surgery; the more we know the better the results will be.

What you can expect when undergoing rhinoplasty surgery

On the day of your surgery, you will be checked into hospital a few hours before the start of the procedure so the nurses can administer the relevant medications and make sure you are settled and at ease. You will then meet with the resident anaesthetist who will take you through the process and ensure your safety throughout the procedure.

Following this, we will prepare the operating room for your arrival and Mr Morgan will see you one last time to ensure you are satisfied and happy to proceed with the pre-operative markings. Rhinoplasty will traditionally take two or three hours to complete, and you will be under general anaesthetic for the duration of the surgery.

The rhinoplasty recovery process

Most patients will experience a recovery turnaround of about 24 hours and may be kept overnight. For the first week, a protective splint will be placed over the affected area. After a week you will be able to resume most daily activities provided they are not too strenuous. After around two weeks, all bruising should have subsided and you should be well on your way to a full recovery.

Mr Morgan will meet with you several times over the following weeks to ensure your healing is progressing as expected and give you an indication of what the reshape will look like. You should begin to feel ‘normal’ again after three weeks and be well on your way to a full recovery.
